Islam and Media Working Group

The overall aim of Islam and Media Working Group is to contribute to the global research efforts seeking to understand social and political realities, the current transformation of the media landscape and theoretical frameworks from the Islamic worldview. The Group strongly encourages scholars to contribute from different ontological, epistemological and axiological positions with the aim to generate debates to work for common ground in media and communication research.

We believe that redressing the gaps of misunderstanding between cultures and civilizations starts from knowledge production, dissemination, and consumption. We recognize that the dominant western tradition of research in journalism and communication has proved to be inadequate to deconstruct and understand media around the globe. The group aims to encourage indigenous and localized philosophical traditions in the Muslim World to enrich the base of journalism and communication research.

To encourage high quality submissions, the Islam and Media Working Group offers awards of excellence each year to three papers presented at the main IAMCR conference.
